Mohawk leads innovation in sustainable flooring with SmartStrand® carpet with DuPont™ Sorona® renewably sourced polymer. In a partnership with DuPont, this carpet exclusively offers fiber made with Bio-PDO™ (the key Sorona® ingredient), which is produced from corn sugar.

By utilizing this new ingredient, 37 percent of Sorona® is being made from renewable resources. This marks the first time that a luxuriously soft carpet offers durability and stain protection, while also making less of an environmental impact.

Why Is SmartStrand Environmentally Smart?

DuPont™ Sorona® plays a major role in the worldwide objective of a renewable economy and represents a new frontier in sustainability. This carpet is environmentally smart because:

• The production of Sorona® polymer requires 30 percent less energy than the production of an equal amount of nylon.
• Greenhouse gas emissions from the production of Sorona® are 63 percent lower than nylon manufacturing.
• This energy reduction results in approximately one gallon of gasoline saved per every seven square yards of carpet.

The superior stain resistance of SmartStrand® carpet is engineered into the fiber and will never wear or wash off, meaning consumers will never need to retreat the carpet with stain protectors after steam cleaning.

SmartStrands Triumphs in Durability
Certified testing includes a “walk test” of more than 20,000 footsteps to simulate an entire year of foot traffic over SmartStrand Triexta, nylon carpet, and PET polyester carpet of different weights. The results by and far demonstrated the superior performance of Triexta’s resiliency and crush resistance.

SmartStrand, nylon, and PET carpets were also analyzed in a Modified Hexapod Test, a mechanical test that simulates the aforementioned walk test in a condensed amount of time.

This demanding assessment proved that SmartStrand performs better than PET and comparable to or better than nylon in even the most strenuous conditions.

These results confirm that we are giving our customers the best product available, an improved option over both nylon and PET polyester carpet.

Wear-Dated® has been testing carpet since 1980 and have developed the Wear-Dated® Tough Testing and Certification process to ensure that every carpet upholds the highest standards of quality, endurance and performance – even over time.

Scientists, engineers and technicians test each new carpet before it can carry the Wear-Dated carpet fiber brand name, ensuring that it passes industry tests as well as lives up to our exacting standards for durability.

Wear-Dated measures and monitors what happens when people walk over the same piece of carpet approximately 20,000 times, rating how well it resists soiling and maintains its original texture and appearance. This ensures that carpet made with Wear-Dated carpet fiber truly delivers durability that a consumer can count on.

During the carpet manufacturing process, carpets get treated with stain-resistance products to protect the carpet from excessive staining when exposed to artificial food dye. Wear-Dated tests for that by pouring acid red #40 dye – similar to that used in Kool-Aid® – on our carpet to see how easily it can be removed. Then it’s “walked on” using a simulator and stained again to ensure that after the soil-resisting product is worn down by traffic, the stain-resistance is still going strong.

Our Story Starts With A Few Thousand Discarded Plastic Bottles… And Culminates In Your Home As Earth-Friendly, Beautiful Carpet
It all started in 1999 in Summerville, Georgia when Mohawk began operating the world’s largest integrated plastic bottle recycling facility. Seeing how the U.S. recycles 30 percent of its plastic bottles, we found a way to use this untapped resource to everyone’s advantage.

We purchase 25 percent of these recycled bottles, a total of 215 million pounds each year. Now trying to envision this many bottles may be difficult. Consider all of the 20 oz. plastic soda bottles stacked from end to end, each bottle approximately nine inches tall. The resulting height is 6,926 Empire State Buildings stacked from end to end. Now that’s a lot of bottles!

From these polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles we can make our EverStrand carpet fibers in a state-of the art process.
